Saved tabs are only as safe as the place they are kept. A session manager that stores everything in one spot can lose it all when the browser profile is reset or the extension is removed. A good setup uses several layers, because each one protects against a different mistake.
The layers in KeepIt
- Auto-save snapshots: KeepIt snapshots your window in the background, every 3 minutes on Free and every minute on Pro. After a crash or an accidentally closed window, restore your tabs from the recovery snapshot.
- Trash: deleted sessions and spaces are kept for 30 days. Restore one, or delete it forever.
- Version history: earlier versions of your sessions and spaces are kept for 30 days on Free and 90 days on Pro.
- Daily backups: the last 7 days of backups and restore points are kept inside the browser. They are lost if you remove KeepIt or the Chrome profile.
- Exported files: a file you control, outside the browser.
- Cloud sync (optional): sign in with Google to keep copies in your account.
What protects against what
| If this happens | This helps |
|---|---|
| Chrome crashes or you close the wrong window | Auto-save recovery snapshot |
| You delete a session by mistake | Trash (30 days) |
| You change a session and regret it | Version history (30 or 90 days) |
| You remove KeepIt or reset your Chrome profile | An exported file, or cloud sync |
| You move to a new computer | Cloud sync, or an exported file |
Export a backup file
- Open the KeepIt popup and choose Tools & Settings (the gear icon).
- Open Backup & Recovery.
- Choose Export JSON or Export HTML and save the file somewhere you control, such as a cloud drive.
- To load a backup later, choose Import backup.
A simple routine
Export a file after any big change, and otherwise once a month. Turn on sync if you want copies in your account. That takes two minutes and covers the one case the in-browser layers cannot: losing the browser profile itself.
